Synopsis Writing at Scale — Netflix Benelux & DACH

For six months, I wrote synopses for Netflix's Benelux and DACH markets — the concise, carefully crafted texts that appear beneath each title and help millions of viewers decide what to watch. Contracted through Grafton and working within Netflix's production platform, I translated complex films and series into clear, compelling copy while preserving tone, narrative focus, and audience appeal. I worked within a strict 153-character limit, platform style guidelines, taxonomy requirements, and the distinct structural demands of feature films and episodic storytelling. My work included showlevel synopses, episodic synopses, and full film descriptions across seven genres — requiring editorial precision, narrative instinct, and the ability to identify the essential hook of a story in very few words.

The work

Every title required multiple synopsis variants — different lengths, different angles, tuned for search and discoverability. The writing had to be precise enough to pass editorial review, creative enough to make someone stop scrolling, and consistent enough to scale across thousands of titles. Below is a selection of screenshots from the production environment. Synopsis text has been obscured to respect platform confidentiality — the focus is on workflow, tooling, and the volume and structure of the work produced.

The approach

Each synopsis started with a question: what makes this title findable, and what makes someone choose it? Working across genres meant constantly recalibrating — comedy requires a different register than thriller, documentary a different precision than dramedy. I studied which synopses performed well on the platform and which didn't, using data and user behaviour to inform editorial decisions.

Taxonomy was as important as tone. Every word had to serve two purposes: hook the viewer and signal the right keywords for platform discoverability. Feedback cycles were built into the process — I used each round of editorial notes to refine my reference system and reduce revisions over time. Creativity was always in service of the guidelines, not the other way around.

Comedy
Comedy synopses were deceptively difficult. Tone is everything — and humour doesn't translate literally across markets. At 153 characters, there's no room to set up a joke, only to signal that one exists.

Drama
Drama demanded precision over atmosphere. A showlevel synopsis had to distil an entire series into a single crystallised statement. Episodic synopses were different — factual, spoiler-free, capturing what happened without editorialising.

Thriller
Thrillers live and die on tension — hard to generate in 153 characters without giving anything away. Every word was load-bearing.

Reality TV
Reality TV required a warmer, more direct register — closer to how someone describes a show to a friend, while staying strictly factual.

Dramedy
Dramedies were among the most nuanced. The synopsis had to hold two tones at once without reading as confused. Finding that balance at character-count was a consistent editorial challenge.

Documentary
Documentary synopses needed authority without dryness. Subjects ranged widely — nature, crime, history — each requiring a different level of precision. For titles based on true events, accuracy was non-negotiable.

Dark Comedy
Dark comedy was the most demanding genre. The synopsis had to signal darkness and wit simultaneously — two tones that can cancel each other out if the balance is off.

Action
Action rewarded economy. Translating visual energy into text without resorting to clichés, inside 153 characters, required language that moved without inflating.

Feature Films
Movies required a different approach entirely — one self-contained story rather than a series. The synopsis had to orient and hook the viewer without revealing the arc.

The craft

Synopsis writing is the discipline of the essential. With 153 characters, a strict taxonomy, and two markets to serve, every word was a decision. What I built here wasn't just a body of work — it was a system for producing quality at scale, consistently, on one of the world's most-watched platforms.
